Seth Meyers is trying to keep score in the burgeoning feud between Donald Trump and Rep. John Lewis (D-GA), who will skip the inauguration because he questions the legitimacy of Trump’s election. As the Late Night host points out, to watch Trump disparage Lewis tells us more about his character than that of his target. But it tell us even more about the Republicans to hear them complain about Lewis — because, heaven forfend, they would never question a president’s legitimacy.
We had all better get used to hearing such whining from Reince Priebus, the incoming White House chief of staff, who comically attempts to explain away Trump’s years-long “birther” crusade against Barack Obama’s legitimacy. Evidently Priebus had to learn to lie as effortlessly and shamelessly as the president-elect to qualify for his new job. He easily passed that test, but he’s still practicing hard every day.
